DATCP currently has two openings for Environmental Enforcement Specialist positions within the Division of Agricultural Resource Management, Bureau of Agrichemical Management.

These are field-based positions and will be assigned a fleet vehicle for work-related travel. The selected applicants can select a headquarter in one of the following counties: 

Northwest position counties: Ashland, Barron, Bayfield, Burnett, Chippewa, Douglas, Polk, Rusk, Sawyer, St Croix, and Washburn

Southeast position counties: Jefferson, Washington, and Waukesha

Qualifying candidates are not required to live in a county headquarter location. However, reimbursement for commuting to or from the employee’s assigned headquarters is not provided (e.g., mileage, meals, parking, lodging, etc.). Routine travel within an assigned territory and throughout the state for assigned work and emergency response is required.

These positions perform environmental enforcement, remediation, investigation and compliance work for a wide variety of agrichemical programs. These positions represent the department in a multi-district region of the state. These positions are responsible for assisting with field oversight for environmental investigation and remediation projects related to improper handling or storage of pesticides or fertilizers. These positions will work cooperatively with the bureau's regulatory program managers, engineers and hydrogeologists, as well as Environmental Enforcement Specialists at the Senior and Advanced level.

These positions are responsible for investigation and compliance involving use or suspected misuse of pesticides. Additional responsibilities include enforcement of both state and federal laws and regulations related to pesticides, medicated commercial animal feeds, fertilizers and related agricultural products. These positions are responsible for encouraging and promoting voluntary compliance with program laws, and for investigation and subsequent enforcement of violations of those laws. These positions have broad field enforcement powers to correct situations to protect the environment, animals, humans and the human food chain.

The classification of these positions is Environmental Enforcement Specialist, which is in schedule-range 15-04 with a starting pay between $32.00 - $35.76 per hour based on qualifications.

This position is not represented by a collective bargaining unit. A 12-month probationary period is required. Pay for current state employees will be set in accordance with the State Compensation Plan at the time of hire.

At DATCP, we strive to deliver efficient and effective programs and services to Wisconsin agriculture, consumers, and businesses. The Department has numerous on-the-job training (OJT) opportunities and transferable skills, unique to each Bureau and position.

These OJT opportunities and transferable skills include direct experience and practice through collaboration with co-workers/supervisor, peer mentoring, and job-specific training modules. These positions will have the opportunity to attend industry conferences.

Conditions of Employment:

DATCP does not sponsor work visas. Any appointment made will be contingent on the selected applicant being able to provide documentation of eligibility to work in the United States.

Possession of a valid driver's license or the ability to provide one’s own transportation for work purposes, is required.

A valid driver’s license and the eligibility to drive a State of Wisconsin Fleet Vehicle* is required.

*In order to be authorized to drive a State vehicle the candidate must meet the requirements of the State of Wisconsin Fleet Vehicle Policy, which are:

• Must have a valid driver’s license;
• Must have a minimum of two years of licensed driving experience;
• Must be 18 years of age.

Additionally, your driving record MUST NOT reflect any of the following conditions:

• Three or more moving violations and/or at-fault accidents in the past two years;
• Operating While Intoxicated (OWI)/Driving Under the Influence (DUI) citation within the past 12 months;
• Suspension or revocation of driver’s license.

Travel is required for approximately 60-80% of this position’s duties and occasional overnight stay or out of state travel.

Ability to transport large amounts of inspection and investigative equipment in a half-ton truck.

Ability to climb and work at elevated heights, such as on railroad cars or semi-trailers.

Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.

Employee may be exposed to dust and other air particles while carrying out job responsibilities.

Minimally qualified candidates will have each of the following:

• Training and/or experience conducting an investigation (collect evidence, conduct interviews, report writing, determine findings, etc.)
• Training and/or experience enforcing statutes, laws, rules, regulations, standards, and/or policies
• Training and/or experience working with teams to establish and enforce priorities, goals, etc.

In addition to the minimum qualifications above, highly qualified candidates will have one or more of the following:

• Experience working in a regulatory environment interpreting and applying state/federal statutes or administrative codes
• Experience working with pesticides, fertilizers and/or commercial animal feed
• Experience using MS Office Suite, other databases, spreadsheets, or other computer applications or systems.
