Compensation:

This position will be assigned a territory region based on the location of the chosen applicant. The applicant must live in Kansas or be willing to relocate.
There are two (2) Food Processing openings. Program will be interviewing and hiring for both open positions!
This position will remain posted until filled.
This professional position serves as the Food Processing Inspector for the Kansas Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Lodging program. In addition, this position shares responsibility for state implementation of the cooperative State – FDA programs regarding inspection of food processing plants. The following will be the responsibility of the Food Processing Inspector if chosen.
Position Summary & Responsibilities:
Conducts inspections under state and/or federal authority for food processors including manufacturers, re-packers, food storage, food warehouses, and on farm inspections at produce growers/farm operations.
Conduct inspections to promote compliance with current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP’s), Hazard Analysis and Risk-based Preventive Controls for Human Food regulations.
Evaluates food safety management systems.
Through documentation of observations, comprehensive report writing including effective use of photographs, videos, and note taking/journal entry.
Communicate and cooperation with all industry, corporations, state and federal counterparts, maintaining good customer relations with both internal and external stakeholders
Perform inspections under FDA Contract including; Full Scope Preventive Control (PC), Limited Scope Preventive Control (PC), Official Establishment Inventory (OEI) data collection, perform on the farm inspections of Produce growers under FSMA Produce Safety requirements and Environmental sampling and commodity hazard sample collection.
Must maintain FDA Credentials and obtain ongoing/continued education
Investigates suspected foodborne illnesses, determine cause, collect and interpret necessary data.
Investigation of natural disasters and transportation accidents affecting regulated facilities and food products and determination of product adulterations and sanitary conditions of facilities via onsite survey.
Conduct recall confirmation initiated by State or Federal agencies including prevention of further distribution by invoking embargos, seizures, or voluntary product destruction.
Conduct new processing inspector training and participate and proficiency in audits and continuing education as required
Technical skills required to review documents and write extensive reports with timely and accurate documentation of violative conditions
Frequently work with other jurisdictions including KDA Meat & Poultry, Dairy and Feed, local, city, county and other regulatory divisions.
Performs additional special projects, participates in meetings and training assigned
Education and compliance assistance tailored to stakeholders and industry with a focus on behaviors, processes and procedures, outreach and education, training and compliance assistance in conjunction with 21 CFR 100-186.
This position is a home-based position. The applicant that is selected for this position will start each workday from his/her home unless traveling for work. Extensive travel, including overnight stays, is required to cover the assigned territory. Lodging and per diem expenses are provided when overnight stays are required.

Qualifications:
- Professionally minded individuals with four years experience in in a biological, agriculture, physical science or food science. Experience may be substituted for education as determined relevant by the agency.
- Knowledge of food safety Laws/Regulations, food preparation, food processing procedures, formulations.
- Technical skills and knowledge to perform inspections under the Current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP), Hazard Analysis, and Risk-based Preventive Controls for Human Food regulation (PCHF Rule).
- Excellent public speaking, written and verbal communication.
- At least one year of experience in planning, implementing, and monitoring activities relevant to the agency's programs. Education may be substituted for experience as determined relevant by the agency.
- Must be able to obtain FDA Credentials.
- Maintain FDA Credentials which includes ongoing education and out of state travel for coursework.
- Employee must have a valid Class C (or higher) Kansas driver’s license or equivalent license from another state. Employee is responsible to maintain an acceptable driving record to safely drive state vehicle and be willing and able to fulfill all job-related travel normally associated with this position.
- Must be able to:
- differentiate between colors on sanitizer test strips.
- lift and/or carry 60 pounds of equipment.
- stand or walk for long periods of time.
- withstand various temperature fluctuations and environmental/weather related conditions.
- bend or stoop on a regular basis.
- drive a vehicle for long periods of time which may result in overnight travel.
