Agriculture Inspector
Annual Salary Range: $36,498.24 – $62,013.60
Minimum Qualifications: The ideal candidate will have knowledge of laws and regulations pertaining to the agricultural industry; sampling procedures and practices as they relate to agricultural fertilizers and feeds; mechanical features of measuring devices used in commercial operations; calibration methods, techniques, and equipment; sanitary procedures and practices as they relate to the handling and packaging of agricultural products; basic computer principles and terminology. Must have the ability to collect and present evidence of violations of laws and regulations and give testimony in court; maintain complete and accurate records; interpret and explain laws and regulations to the public and private business owners; learn standard testing and inspecting techniques; and establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public and members of the industry.
Animal Industry Livestock/Meat Inspector
Annual Salary Range: $21.64/hourly + benefits
Minimum Qualifications: Knowledge of, or a background in, animal science or the livestock/meat industry is preferred. A background in agriculture would be beneficial. The ideal candidate will have knowledge of animal agriculture, animal anatomy, meat inspection, livestock diseases and livestock slaughter procedures. Must have the ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; write concise and accurate reports; follow oral and written instructions; recognize general animal health; observe livestock slaughter operations; think critically when evaluating processes; deal tactfully with others; travel.

The South Dakota Department of Health (SDDH) regulates manufactured foods, retail food stores, restaurants, and food service. The entry level classification utilized by SDDH is:
State Inspector
Annual Salary Range: $36,498.24 – $62,013.60
Minimum Qualifications: Ideal candidates for the job will possess the following:
Knowledge of: Length, mass, and capacity; weights and measures; mathematics and the metric system; English language including grammar, spelling, and punctuation; basic computer operations including email, word processing, and databases; bookkeeping; at least one of the inspection areas covered by this position to include agriculture, food service, social services, video lottery, fire safety, weights and measures, and public health sanitation; NIST Handbooks 44, 130, and 133.
Ability to: Function independently; operate computers and use a computer keyboard; operate a variety of inspection equipment; learn and comprehend information; create accurate and thorough reports; lift and move test equipment or items being inspected; interpret rules, laws, and procedures; exercise tact and discretion in communicating and dealing with persons of varying backgrounds and temperament; communicate information clearly and concisely; work effectively by oneself and with others; make decisions using good judgement; lift and move 50 pounds.
