How to Obtain a State Job:
New Jersey posts job announcements on the New Jersey’s Civil Service Commission’s (CSC) website Monday through Friday, as soon as the CSC identifies a need. Most job announcements are open for 21 calendar days. A job announcement is an invitation for the public to compete for existing and future job vacancies in a State or local government job title. Please keep in mind that a job announcement does not mean there is a current job opening. After you have identified the job announcement in which you are interested, you should thoroughly review all the requirements to make sure you are qualified to compete. If you are interested in the position, you will need to complete an application – Only on-line applications are accepted. Your application must be submitted with all required documentation and the specified application fee.
Depending on the job, the evaluation could take one of several forms: Evaluation of Education and Experience, Questionnaire/Supplemental Application, or a Written Test. After you pass your exam, your name goes on an eligible list ranked by score and you will receive a Notification of Eligibility. When an appointing authority (hiring agency) notifies the CSC that it wants to fill vacancies, the CSC sends them the names that are ranked highest on the eligible list for the title they want to use. This is called a certification list. When your name appears on a certification list, it means that you may be interviewed and considered for appointment.
