Minnesota Department of Agriculture
The Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) regulates milk, dairy products, manufactured food, retail food stores, bottled water, feed, and produce that is subject to the produce safety rule. The two entry level classifications utilized by MDA are:
Agricultural Specialist
Annual Salary Range: $47,898 – $69,593
Minimum Qualifications: A Bachelor’s degree in biological or physical science, food science, nutrition, environmental health or a closely related field that includes 30 semester or 45 quarter credits in science courses. Must be educationally qualified to obtain certification as a Registered Sanitarian (RS)/Registered Environmental Health Specialist (REHS) (for MN or NEHA) or obtain within 2 years of appointment to the position. Must currently possess and maintain an active/valid driver’s license with an acceptable motor vehicle record subject to review. Must have the ability to celebrate diversity and a strong commitment to a respectful and inclusive work environment.
Dairy Inspector I
Annual Salary Range: $42,827 – $61,651
Minimum Qualifications:
- High School diploma or equivalent;
- Knowledge of milk and its components sufficient to understand milk pricing, quality and product standards;
- Minimum of 1 year experience working in a dairy or food plant in production, quality control, sanitation, dairy field representative, or on a dairy farm;
- Technical knowledge of the principles used in the production and processing of milk and/or milk products sufficient to evaluate equipment, sanitation and processing procedures;
- Effective oral and written communication skills sufficient to communicate effectively with the public;
- Organizational skills sufficient to make judgment decisions, manage time, schedule job responsibilities, and maintain accurate and detailed records and reports;
- Availability for travel and occasional overnight travel;
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds;
- Proficient in basic computer applications sufficient to enter data, write reports and correspond with industry; and
- Must currently possess and maintain an active/valid driver’s license with an acceptable motor vehicle record subject to review.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree from and accredited institution in agricultural science, animal or dairy, food technology or other closely related field
- Experience performing dairy or food inspections for a government agency
- Awareness of State and Federal laws and regulation as they apply to dairy farms and/or dairy plants
- Experience working with the public in a government enforcement capacity
- Experience working with dairy producers/farmers

Minnesota Department of Health
The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) regulates restaurants and food service. The entry level classification utilized by MDH is:
Public Health Sanitarian I
Annual Salary Range: $45,581 – $66,190
Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Health, Sanitary Science, Sanitary Engineering, or related environmental health field. Successful completion of at least 30 semester or 45 quarter baccalaureate or post-baccalaureate credits in the physical or biological sciences. Candidates must provide evidence of course completion prior to consideration for employment; OR Registration as a Sanitarian/Environmental Health Specialist.
Additional requirements:
- Verbal and listening skills sufficient to interview employees in a variety of environments including while loud equipment is operating, in busy kitchens and while the employees are working.
- Ability to participate in training and meetings using video conference, conference calls and other types of remote communication.
- Ability to use a laptop computer and cell phone in the field.
- English verbal skills must be sufficient to communicate clearly with owners, managers, and employees.
- Written communications skills must be sufficient to document concise, accurate and complete information and observations.
- Critical thinking skills sufficient to collect and analyze information, identify areas of focus, and make decisions based on evidence gathered.
- Interpersonal skills to develop and maintain effective working relationships, inform operators of violations and other pertinent findings, and participate in legal proceedings.
