How to Obtain a State Job:

Applicants interested in working for the State of Idaho should search the Idaho Division of Human Resources job vacancies page; create an account and review/select job postings of interest. Review the job responsibilities and minimum qualifications; if you are interested in applying for a position, select the “Apply” button to be taken to the online account portal. If you have not already established an account, you will need to do so at this time.

Applicants can complete an online application and take an examination for the position they are applying for. Examinations for open positions measures each applicant’s qualifications and ranks applicants by level of qualification. Upon completing the application process the exam is graded and a score assigned (this process of grading and scoring can take 2-3 weeks). Each applicant who completes the online application process and passes the exam for the open position is placed on the register for that position. The register of all qualified candidates who have applied for the position typically remains valid for 90 days up to a year, depending on the position. From the register, a hiring list is created for the open position, which sorts applicants by exam score in descending order (those who scored highest will appear at the top). State law requires anyone hired into a classified state job must come from the top 25 names on a hiring list (or who tied for 25th place with their score). The hiring agency uses the hiring list to begin the interview process. Anyone whose name appears among the top 25 names on a hiring list may be considered for an interview, but it is not required that all those in the top 25 be interviewed.
