Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services 

The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS) Division of Food Safety regulates manufactured food, retail establishments selling pre-packaged food, the dairy industry on farms and produce.   

Note: To be considered for a position with the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services: All fields in the Candidate Profile must be completed. Environmental Specialist II, Manufactured Food 
Annual Salary Range:  $ 36,467.60 – $76,545.15

Minimum Requirements: A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a major in one of the physical or natural sciences, engineering or allied health and one (1) year of professional experience in environmental protection, regulation or health; one of the physical or natural sciences; or a master’s degree from an accredited college or university in one of the physical or natural sciences, or a doctorate from an accredited college or university in one of the physical or natural sciences, or professional experience in environmental protection, regulation or health; one of the physical or natural sciences can substitute on a year-for-year basis for the required college education. Valid Class E Driver License. Employees appointed to positions involved in food establishment inspections under authority of Chapter 500, Florida Statutes, must complete basic training requirements stated in the Manufactured Food Regulatory Programs Standard 2 (MFRPS), Laws and Rules and Certified Food Manager certifications, as required, as implemented by the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services within 12 months of appointment and/or before attaining permanent status in the class. 

Sanitation and Safety Specialist, Retail Food Inspector 
Annual Salary Range: $30,988.62 – $67,457.80

Minimum Requirements: Prefer bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course of study in one of the physical or natural sciences, environmental health, sanitary science, public health, engineering, hotel or restaurant management, criminal justice, law enforcement, or an area of health care, nutrition, or dietetics; or a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university & one (1) year of professional environmental health, regulatory inspection, investigative work, health care, nutrition, or hotel or restaurant experience; or a master’s degree from an accredited college or university in one of the educational areas described above. Field or laboratory experience in environmental or public health, a physical or natural science, engineering, or experience in hotel or restaurant management, hotel or restaurant inspection, food establishment operations, food sanitation or quality control, regulatory inspection, investigative work, health care, or nutrition can substitute on a year-for-year basis for the required college education. Licensure/registration/certification requirements: Valid Class E Driver License. Employees appointed to positions involved in food establishment inspections under authority of Chapter 500, Florida Statutes, must pass and maintain the Food and Drug Administration Standardization Program and/or Manufactured Food Certification, and Laws and Rules and Certified Food Manager certifications, as required, as implemented by the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services within 12 months of appointment and/or before attaining permanent status in the class. 

Sanitation and Safety Specialist, Dairy Inspector 
Annual Salary Range: $39,846.82 – $67,457.80

Minimum Requirements: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course of study in one of the physical or natural sciences, environmental health, sanitary science, public health, engineering, hotel or restaurant management, criminal justice, law enforcement, or an area of health care, nutrition, or dietetics; or A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university & (1) year of professional environmental health, regulatory inspection, investigative work, health care, nutrition, or hotel or restaurant experience; or A master’s degree from an accredited college or university in one of the educational areas described above. Field or laboratory experience in environmental or public health, a physical or natural science, engineering, or experience in hotel or restaurant management, hotel or restaurant inspection, food establishment operations, food sanitation or quality control, regulatory inspection, investigative work, health care, or nutrition can substitute on a year-for-year basis for the required college education. Requires possession of a valid driver license. 

Please Note: There will be a numerically based work sample administered with an established minimum required passing score to all eligible candidates to move to the next phase of consideration. Employees appointed to positions involved in collecting samples for the dairy regulatory program must pass an evaluation conducted by a Milk Sampling Surveillance Officer to become a Certified Sampler within 90 days of employment and maintain valid certification. 

Fruit and Vegetable Inspector, Produce Inspector 
Annual Salary Range: $26,540.54 – $52,670.80

Minimum Requirements: Hold a high school diploma or its equivalent. Must hold a valid Class E Driver License. Applicant must be able to demonstrate effective written and communication skills. Must be able to travel extensively. Must pass a background screening, including fingerprinting as a condition for employment. 

Preferred: Have a minimum of one (1) year experience in an agriculture related field, such as farm experience, agricultural commodity grading, food processing, laboratory testing, quality assurance, or process auditing.

Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation 

The Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR) regulates restaurants.   

Sanitation and Safety Specialist 
Annual Salary Range: $30,988.62 – $67,457.80

Minimum Requirements: Two-year associate degree in culinary or hospitality management or Two or more years’ industry-related experience (hotel or restaurant management, restaurant operations, field, or laboratory experience in environmental or public health, food sanitation or quality control).

Please note: Applicants with a bachelor’s degree in a health-related field or a bachelor’s degree in any field and one-year industry-related experience meets minimum requirements. Valid driver license.

Florida Department of Health 

The Florida Department of Health (DOH) regulates food hygiene facilities. Food inspection positions are directly hired and managed through County Health Departments. 

Environmental Specialist I 
Annual Salary Range: $30,988.62 – $67,457.80

Minimum Requirements: Position requires a bachelor’s degree from a U.S. accredited college or university with a minimum of 30 credit hours in a related science field. Valid driver’s license required. Incumbent may be required to work before, during and/or beyond normal work hours or days in the event of an emergency. Emergency duty required of the incumbent includes working in special needs, or performing other emergency duties including, but not limited to, responses to or threats involving any disaster or threat of disaster, man-made or natural.
