Connecticut Department of Agriculture

The Connecticut Department of Agriculture (CDA) regulates milk, dairy products, feed, produce and shellfish. The entry level classification utilized by CDA is:

Agriculture Marketing and Inspection Representative 1 
Annual Starting Salary: $70,983-$89,640

Minimum Qualifications:  Five (5) years of experience in the marketing, research, development, production or inspection of agricultural commodities or businesses. College training in agriculture or a closely related field may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equaling one-half (1/2) year of experience to a maximum of four (4) years for a Bachelor’s degree.

Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection

The Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection (CDCP) regulates manufactured food processors, bottled water, and dairy products (cheese, butter and ice cream). The entry level classification utilized by CDCP is:

Consumer Protection Inspector 
Annual Starting Salary Range: $65,913 – $83,239

Minimum Qualifications: Five (5) years of experience in the inspection and enforcement of food laws and regulations OR production and distribution of food OR food bacteriology research OR quality control of food.  College training may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equaling one-half (1/2) year of experience to a maximum of four (4) years for a Bachelor’s degree.  A Master’s degree in a closely related field may be substituted for one (1) additional year of General Experience.

Connecticut Department of Public Health

The Connecticut Department of Public Health (CDPH) regulates retail food stores and restaurants. The entry level classification utilized by CDPH is:

Environmental Sanitarian
Annual Salary Range: $55,910 – $75,554

Minimum Qualifications: Five (5) years of experience in environmental health technical operations.  College training may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equaling one-half (1/2) year of experience to a maximum of four (4) years for a Bachelor’s degree. A Master’s degree in environmental health or public health including twelve (12) semester hours of environmental health courses may be substituted for one (1) additional year of the General Experience.
