Ohio Department of Agriculture 

The Ohio Department of Agriculture (ODA) regulates manufactured food, milk and dairy products, animal feed, meat, retail food stores, produce and bottled water.  The entry level classifications utilized by ODA are:

Food Safety Specialist 1 (Retail and Manufactured Food)
Annual Salary Range:  $49,899-$65,936

Minimum Qualifications:  (1) Certificate of registration as sanitarian, sanitarian-in-training or eligible to become sanitarian-in-training by Ohio State Board of Sanitarian Registration pursuant to Chapter 4736 of Ohio Revised Code; (2) completion of full four year course of study in accredited college or university leading to bachelor’s or higher degree which included at least 45 quarter units or 30 semester hours in food science, environmental health, biology, chemistry, physics, geology, physical sciences, food technology, epidemiology, veterinary medical science or related field of study; (3) six months experience in operation of personal computer; and (4) valid driver’s license.

Meat Inspector Trainee (Meat inspection)
Annual Salary Range:  $41,018-$49,899

Minimum Qualifications: (1) One course in animal science, agribusiness &/or food business management or three months experience in livestock industry/industrial meat & poultry processing; (2) one course in biological sciences or chemistry; and (3) must be able to provide own transportation.

Plant Health Inspector (Feed)
Annual Salary Range:  $49,899-$65,936

Minimum Qualifications: (1) Completion of undergraduate core coursework in agricultural field (e.g., agronomy, biology, horticulture, entomology, plant pathology, environmental science); (2) one year experience in agricultural field commensurate with duties to be performed as described on the approved position description on file; (3) three months experience in operation of personal computer; and (4) valid driver’s license.

Sanitarian Program Specialist 1 (Milk & Dairy Inspection)
Annual Salary Range:  $54,570-$79,934

Minimum Qualifications: Certificate of registration as sanitarian-in-training or sanitarian issued by Ohio State Board of Sanitarian Registration in accordance with Chapter 4736 of Revised Code, or eligible for registration as sanitarian-in-training or sanitarian in accordance with Chapter 4736 of Revised Code & must acquire certificate as registered sanitarian or sanitarian-in-training prior to engaging in practice of environmental health, but not later than 90 days from date of employment. 

Additionally, for positions in the Dairy Program, must meet one of the following options (appropriate for area to be assigned): Completion of undergraduate core program in agriculture from an accredited college or university with specialization in dairy science, animal science or food science; OR 24 months training; OR 24 months experience in management of dairy production or dairy processing operations; and must be able to provide own transportation.
