Montana Department of Agriculture 

The Montana Department of Agriculture (MDA) regulates feed and produce that is subject to the produce safety rule. The entry level classification utilized by MDA is:  

Plant Science Specialist 
Annual Starting Salary:  $56,306 

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor of Science degree in a related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Seasonal Organic Inspector
Annual Starting Salary: $22.00 hourly

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in animal science, plant science, agricultural science, environmental science, or closely related field with a valid driver’s license. Other combinations of education or experience may be substituted on a case-by-case basis.

Montana Department of Livestock 

The Montana Department of Livestock (MDL) protects the livestock industry. The Animal Health and Food Safety Division regulates meat and poultry, milk and eggs, and dairy products. The entry level classifications utilized by MDL is: 

Health Sanitarian
Annual Starting Salary:  $57,117 

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor of Science degree and maintain current Montana Sanitarian Registration. State Survey Rating Officers for Interstate Milk Shipping (IMS) must maintain FDA certification for rating dairy farms, dairy processing plants, single service manufacturing, and bulk milk haulers.

Meat Poultry Inspector
Annual Starting Salary: $22.66 hourly 

Minimum Qualifications: Completion of high school or equivalent, plus one year experience in the food safety or meat industries.
